The door decoration

Every year the school has a door decorating contest and the principal picks the best door from every grade. Our door was our class having a snowball fight.Today,December 18, 2014 we had an assembly and the principal announced the winners…WE WON FOR THIRD GRADE !!!  We were SO excited.  I can't wait for next years for next year's door decoration.

Today the last school  day of 2014.   Everyone is in the Christmas mode with lights, bells and everything but some are sad because they won't see there friends in a while. Some are happy a lot for Christmas and no school.  the last day also has a great lunch mmmmmmm waffles and sausage.

Crazy sock day

Have you ever woren crazy socks in school before? Well we have and it's called crazy sock day!It is when you have a celebration and you get to wear crazy socks to school.  We got to take off our shoes. I love taking off my shoes in class. The reason why it is fun to take off our shoes in class is because we only get to do it for celebrations. Some people have tall socks some people have small socks and some people have toe socks. Toe socks are really, comefey I mean, really comefey.  The weird thing is is that no one wore fuzzy socks.I love fuzzy socks.Dont you?"       





Snow queen

We saw the TRYPS play SNOW QUEEN on Monday. These kids called Gurdie and Kade did not know about the snow queen and a old girl told them about the snow queen and Kade now hates Gurdie because  a piece of the Sniw Queen's glass got in Kade's eye and turned Kade on the evil side and he got kidnapped and Gurdie is now on a quest to save Kade and Gurdie is now trying to get Kade. She got to a forest and found a talking crow and his name is crow. And some yucky people and one said"Kade is yucky yucky yucky yucky YUCKY!" Then she was in a cave with Crow and they found a guy called him self Lost then she hiked out and found 3 people. 2 wanted to eat Gurdie and 1 wanted to keep her. She had a knife and had a chicken, a moose and a moutain cat and then a little later they slowly lost the animals because they got to tired and then a sewing girl came in and Gurdie found out where the snow queen was. So Gurdie found the snow queen and Kade and Gurdie was battling the snow queen and she vanished the snow queen and Kade and Gurdie turned back to the best of best friends. -- by Carson

Speakers

We had doctors come to are class and talked about germs. One of the doctors was a dermatologist. Another doctor was a surgeon for hands and skin. The other one told us a lot about communicable diseases. The surgeon gave us masks and hats.The hats and masks helped you not get germs in the patient.

Today we went to KMIZ news station to learn about tv stations.we learned that weather forcasters use Doppler radar to track storms and that they have stayed at the station for 20 hours to track a storm! Pj day

Today was PJ day at Mill Creek. I bet your school hasn't had better day. more than half of the class wore pj's. Some people did not take the opportunity and were sad. Exactly 11 pepole wore pajamas .



Terror at the Zoo

In Terror at the Zoo there are two kids named Ellen and Corey and an escaped prisoner named Tony. Ellen got a birthday present from her grandparents that was a card that let four people come to the zoo for  a camp out.  Their parents got stuck on an plane and the grandparents can't come because Grandma broke her leg. So they went by themselves.When Ellen and Corey got to the zoo their parents weren't there. Later that night Ellen and Corey discovered there was a robber in the zoo.  Corey went to check it out while Ellen was sleeping.  He ran into the robber - uh oh. When Ellen wakes up she goes looking for Corey and discovers he has been kidnapped by the robber. What should Ellen do? - by Parker and Carson

Multiplication facts

In class we are leaning 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 multiplication facts because we are going to do a 100 multiplication problem test in 10 minutes after Thanksgiving.  We are trying to get down to 5:00 by the end of the year.  Now we're practicing the facts with games and worksheets to get faster at our facts.

Cursive

Our class is starting cursive in our Handwriting notebook we did L , H, K, and T in cursive. We trace a gray line in our Handwriting book to practice first.  Then we try on our own. We learned uphill strokes, overhill strokes, and side strokes. We saw the how to do a,o,d,g,f,p. we also did 11 lines of cursive the letters were L,H,K, and T. I believe we spelled words like Colin,Ice and more and it's fun to see how we can spell words.




Front Row App

I showed the kids an app to practice math today.  It is called Front Row.  It allows kids to practice all areas of math (not just multiplication).  It also allows you to see their progress.  I sent home a sheet with your child today that has more information about how you and your child can log on.  You can also access this program online.

This is app is good  practice because it shows the kids how to do concepts that they struggle with.  It also has manipulatives, a pencil they can write with, and a speaker to read hard words.  Its format is also similar to what the new state standardized test will look like in May.

Once they take the placement test they should choose adaptive practice.  This allows the program to give the students the practice they need.  Assigned practice lets the student choose the area to practice.

Multiplication Books

Our class made multiplication books. We were learning all our multiples from 2 through 12. Ms.Mathes had told us to color in hundreds charts each day from 2 through 12. Every day we did a different multiple. But finally, yesterday we finished. Ms.Mathes told us to arrange them from 2 through 12. Then we brought them over to her so she could staple them for us. And if we had extra time, we could decorate our multiplication books. It was fun. We all loved it.  By Meera

Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio

If you don't know what Polio is.... you'll find out.  Peg Kehret was an ordinary girl at school one day. A minute later she just collapsed. She went to the doctor's office  and they took a test. Her Mom, Dad, and Peg thought she just had the Flu. It turned out to be more serious then the Flu. It was Polio. Polio was a disease that paralyzed you. When she got Sheltering Arms they told her she had 2 types of a Polio.  The 2 types of Polio was Spinal wich paralyzed you and Respiratory wich it was hard for you to breath. So she was transferred to Universty of Minessota Hospital. When she arrived there she was put in isolation. The doctor told her there was another type of Polio. The 3rd one was called Bulbar. Bulbar makes it hard for you swallow and talk. Her parents came to visit her one day and she hadn't eaten for a week. They asked her what she wanted to eat. Peg responded, "A chocolate milkshake." The nurses warned her parent not get her one, but they did get Peg a chocolate milkshake. When Peg's parents arrived took out a chocolate milkshake. Peg took a sip and another then it turned out she drank the entire  milkshake. She went to sleep and when she woke up her fever was down. Peg mumbled to her self, "That chocolate milkshake may have saved my life." Did the chocolate milkshake really save her life? Read Small Steps and you'll find out.

Skippy


Can you count by 4s😐? In the game Skippy it might come in handy.  Skippy is where there are people in a straight line.  The people in the straight line are counting by whatever number - like 4.  If you get out you have to sit down. Here are the ways you can get out. If you are counting by 4s and you say 10 instead of 12 you have to sit down which means your out.  The other way is if the person in front of you says 48 you say Skippy then the person behind you is OUT. The last person standing will be the WINNER!!!  😀

Handwriting

We have practiceing handwriting. Handwriting is where you practice writing your letters in the neatest way possible. It is not hard. For example: it shows the letter T you have to write the letter t over and over.  Say it shows the word dog you have to write the word dog two times. Say it shows the letter H you have to write the letter H over and over. We are going to do cursive soon.  I don't think that cursive will be hard because Anna and Liza (that is me) we have been practicing some letters in cursive at home. Handwriting is so fun. I love handwriting but some times it is not fun to me and Anna.

The Lemonade war

In the Lemonade war there are two kids named Evan and Jessie.Evan is mad at Jessie because she is skipping 3rd grade and going to Evan's class in fourth grade.  Evan started a lemonade stand with Scott, his kind of friend. They are kind of friends because Scott ran over Evan's bicycle helmet on purpose. The two boys get a lot of customers but then they start to lose customers because Jessie and Megan stole all of the customers by starting a lemonade stand further than Evan and Scott.

Kindergarten Buddies

We have kindergarten buddies. We went to Mrs.  Dixon's room to make a Halloween craft that was Frankenstein.  We read off a piece of paper that told us what to do on our Frankenstein.  The piece of paper told us what to do.  For example, if you are a girl you have a purple head and neck and if you are a boy you have a green head and neck. And if you like chocolate candy better than fruity candy you have zig zag hair and if you don't you have wavy hair. And for the stitches,if you are in 3rd grade you have 3 stitches and if you are the kindergartener you have 2 stitches. For the bolts, if you have a pet you have the bolts on the side of your head.  If you don't have a pet the bolts are on your neck. For the eyes if you ride the bus a lot then you do not have cross eyes, but if you do anything else you have cross eyes.  For the smile it says if you like Halloween then you do a small smile and if you LOVE Halloween then you have a deep smile."I mean like who doesn't like Halloween!!!!" So I hope you like Halloween and have a great one.  :0)

In writing we have been reading the book Knuckleheads!!! This book should inspire you to have different writing ideas. Some ideas this book might have gave you is....

Begginings
A beginnings are something that NEEDS TO grab your readers attention. If it doesn't grab your readers attention it could make nobody want to read your book. Some ideas to start off your beggining is...
- A question
- A mystery (Make sure not to leave it a mystery to long)
- A sound
There are many more , but these were some examples.

Vivid Verbs
Instead of just using plain old boring vebs like....
- Ran
You use...  We Zipped to the finish line. The vivid verbs help make you story more insteresting.

Ending
The end needs to remind your reader about what you were reading about.  Let's say you were writing about a time your cat threw up. You might want to say...

-I still can't believe it made all of my brothers throw up with the cat.

This week we have been learning about personal narritives. It's where you write about yourself,such as ...your Birthday,pet, vacation,first time doing  something,family/friends,when you got sick/hospital,when you went somewhere,traditions,holidays,special events,and much more!!! If you write about one of those, you always have to remember,make it interesting,and make it about yourself instead of other people that are in the story. If you don't make it interesting and you want to be a writer when you grow up,your editor won't except it and you'll probably have to do it all over again! Actually no matter what, you'll probably have to write it all over again,because authors always have to revise! Writing personal narritives, takes lots and lots of work! The Secrets of Robbers Cave


David and Jeff are trying to find the mystery of Lost Island. Their cousin Claire has spotted them and now she and Yum-Yum have to tag along. They built a fort and they dug up a box and in the box was spurs and there was a piece of paper that said,"Wells Fargo Driver Killed on Main Street $12,000 missing Silver Spur Bandit Still on the Loose hand shoot off in bloody gun battle reward dead or alive." One day when Claire was gone they found out that the McCoy boys were there because, there was a candy bar wrapper. David was chasing it and found a boulder like thing. Then they discovered it was the cave. They went little far back in the cave in then heard a noise so they started running to the front of the cave. Show don't tell



We played a game called Show, Dont Tell   This is how you play. You get called up to pick a card that would say a feeling. It is just like the game called Charades.  Guess what feeling we are doing?!?!



We played he game to help us write with shows in our own stories. Shows make writing more interesting because the reader can picture what is happening.

Ecosystems




The ecosystems are doing ok, but the water is green and they are smelly. The far one to the right has the greenest water.  Most of the snails are on the walls of the bottle, but some are dead. Some worms are dead too. Our grass has grown tall!  Our grass is about 1 1/2 inches. 

TJ Wheeler assembly


 
On Tuesday,we had an assembly. A guy named"TJ Wheeler" came to our school to play some Blues. If  you went to the Roots and Blues festival you would have seen him there. There was a song called"Shakin With No Bacon!" There was also songs from Disney movies to songs kids wrote!  He's been to our school before,but every year..... it gets better and better!!!!!!!!!

announcements and cooperation

Today the announcements were in our classroom. We talked about yesterday when we played a game with dots.Nobody knew what color their dot was. We had to get in a group with the same color dots. We cooperated by pointing and using signals to direct people to the right group.  By Ella & Jack

Secrets of Droon Picture Vote

We did a vote on who's picture would go on the wall. The picture has to be based on the book we read for read aloud. How we voted is Mrs.Mathes picked out five pictures and we narrowed it down by voting two by two until we only had one left. Then that picture will go on the wall. Me era'is picture won. We read The Secrets of Droon #1 it is really good.  I recommend for you to read it. It is about three kids that discover a world under Eric's house. When they go yo he world they meet four people.  Their names are princess Keeah, Gallen, Lord Sparr, and a spider troll named Max.  Read the book to find out if they can defeat evil Lord Sparr.--Katrina


Pop Rock Writing

We  did 5 senses about pop rocks on Wednesday. These are some words we used to describe eating Pop Rocks:  sweet, popping, colorful, rattling, sticky and sizzle. We also did similes about Pop Rocks. We said they exploded in our mouths like a bomb, storm, hail, machine gun, dynamite and bacon sizzling. I hope you had fun learning about Pop Rocks! -- Anna & Krista

Bird Beak Time


On  September 24th  we learned how certain bird beaks help the bird to survive and get food. We used tools to get food like one of the things we tried to get rice from clay. The clay was shaped like a log and the rice were pretend insects. We used tweezers,spoons,staple removers to get the rice. We discovered the tweezers worked the best.  We did 6 more kinds of activities.  These pictures show some other tools we used as bird beaks. ---by Harper

Camouflage


    
Yesterday we finished our camouflage animals. Camouflage is an adaptation some animals have to hide from predators or to help them catch food. We had options of a lizard,snake,or butterfly to try to camouflage. We also got to pick our own backround. After that, we had to try to color and match the same exact colors to try to camouflage them. It was kind of hard,because not all of the colors matched the backround. Some of the pictures are not that camouflaged,but some you can't even see the animal such as that flower one and the polka dotted one. It took a lot of work!!!!!
