SALVATION ARMY BELL RINGING

1.  Mill Creekers have rung Salvation Army bells outside Macy's the last 4 or 5 years.  Interested classes sign up for half an hour blocks.  This year we are ringing bells on Saturday, December 14th.  I signed our class up to bell ring at the Macy's west doors from 1:00-1:30.  This is totally voluntary.  Friends and family members are welcome.  The more the merrier!

THE PENGUIN PATCH (a new event at Mill Creek)

1.   On Friday, December 6th all students will go and preview the items available at the Penguin Patch shop.
2.    December 9, 10, & 11 classes are assigned shopping times.  Our class time is 11:30 on Tuesday, Dec. 10th.  Students that have  money from our class will  shop at the Penguin Patch in the commons at that time.
3.    Thursday and Friday will be shopping days from 8-10 for  students that forgot their money on their day during the week.

Ewwwwwwww

Today we looked at the germs we grew.  We put them in a dark place and below are the results.

The germs that came from the bottom of people's shoes and the toilet handle and the computer keyboard grew but not everybody's germs grew

Today we learned about your body  defenses.  Some are cilia in your throat that if you swallow then it will take care of it and if it passes your cilla  then there is your  stomach acid   and if it gets past that then you have your white blood cells which they will not get passed that.

Glow germs

Today we put Glow Germ (fake germs) on our hands. It was a test to see if you washed your hands good.  This is what it looked like under the black light before we washed our hands.

Then we washed our hands and put them back under the black light again.

When we washed lots if people forgot to wash their finger nails and wrists.  We learned to wash your hands really well -- especially  around our nails and wrists. You should sing the ABCs while you wash your hands. You should wash with soap and warm water and dry off.

Germs

One of our classmates was wondering if we could grow germs. So in class yesterday we used petri dished with agar in them to grow germs.  We all went to different places and rubbed Q-tips on places that people touch every day like keyboards and faucet handles. Then we rubbed the Q-tip in the agar.  Then we closed  the lid and gave it to Ms. Mathes and she put it in a dark, damp, warm place because that is a germ's favorite place.

Feld trip

Today we went to the planetarium and learned about the body and a litte about what it takes to be an astronaut.  We learned that your body has cells that fight off viruses.  To be an astronaut you have to go through multiple tests. They have to spin around in a machine to get used to the G forces in space. They also have to ride in the "vomit comet". You have to have years  of training befor you get to go to space.  When you are in space you have to work out to keep your muscles strong so you can walk when you get back to earth.

Spelling

Every week we have 3 days to work on spelling we have to cut out words or pictures then we glue or write into groups that look or sound the same. For example, long I words in one column and short I in another. Then we turn it in then we get a piece of paper that has questions that we have to fill out about our words.

Math Thursday

Today in math we learned about multiplying by 9's. We learned that 9x7= 63 but if you don't think that is right, you can just add 6+3 and if it =9 that means it's the right answer.  All the multiples of 9 the digits add up to 9.

Game day Wednesday

Today was game day. Game day was only for people who got no referrals to the office from lunch, the classroom, recess, and specials. We couldn't bring electronics or games that were loud ( you might already know that). We only could play for 45 minutes. We thought that it was special because we might not do this again.  There were games like Trouble, Monopoly, and Sorry. It was fun!

Reading Tuesday

Today right now we are reading. We're all reading different books and we have orders of who has to write responses about their book. To know the book is perfect we use the 5 fingers. This is what you do. You read the first page. If you don't know the word you put up a finger. If you don't know 2 words it's a good fit. If you don't know 3 or more words it's too hard.

Read Aloud

Today in read aloud we are still reading Small steps. Peg is a 12 year old girl who got polio in case you forgot. She is in sheltering arms ( that is a hospital for people who have polio) , but she got moved to a university hospital, because Peg couldn't breath we'll and she needed an iron lung and sheltering arms didn't have a iron lung and because her polio case was too extreme. Peg's case was so extreme that she thought she would die, but after she drank a milkshake( which Polio patients aren't aloud to drink)  and suddenly her temperature lowered and Peg lost 2 out of 3 kinds of polio. She was still paralyzed but one day she wanted to itch her self and she actually moved her arm and fingers. Later in the book she returns to sheltering arms and she was moved into a room with 4 other girls. She was  strong enough to be in a wheelchair and soon enough she was in walking sticks.
